If you drive over Cecil Ashburn most mornings, you probably think of Hampton Cove as the place you come home to. I want to make a case that the more interesting version of this community in 2026 is the one you can reach on foot from your driveway. A ten-mile paved network, a playground that pulled Saturday plans back inside the ZIP code, and two restaurants that opened within a mile of each other have quietly reshuffled what a weekend here looks like.
The through-line for this guide is simple. Hampton Cove has spent a decade building things that connect to each other. In 2026, that connection is finally what defines the place, not the drive over the mountain.
The Ten Miles That Do the Work
Start with the paved backbone. The Big Cove Creek Greenway runs nearly 3 miles through eastern Huntsville, connecting the Hampton Cove and Cove Creek communities with the natural habitats surrounding Big Cove Creek, and it hands off in two directions. On the south end it ends at Hays Nature Preserve, where you can pick up the Flint River Greenway. Mid-trail, travelers can also pick up the Little Cove Road Greenway to go 5 miles northeast to the Flint River and the McMullen Cove community.
Add Hampton Cove's own internal loops and you get what community materials describe as more than 2,000 homes across 20 neighborhoods, 28 stocked lakes, 54 holes of Robert Trent Jones championship golf, and over 20 miles of connected sidewalks and greenways. The number that matters is the second one. Twenty miles of connected pavement means a resident on Old Highway 431 can reach the elementary school, the playground, the preserve, and two of the newer restaurants without ever pulling out of a driveway.
A note on parking, because it saves people a lap. A parking lot and trailhead is available at Old Highway 431 and Wade Road. Additional parking can be found in the Hays Nature Preserve. You can also park in the lots at the Hampton Cove Center, a shopping complex at the corner of Highway 431 and Old Highway 431. The middle lot is the one most residents underuse.
What Opened Within Walking Distance
Two chains landed on the greenway's doorstep in the last twenty-four months, and both are the kind of casual sit-down that fills a gap Hampton Cove used to drive downtown to fill.
Jefferson's, a concept known for its hand-pattied burgers, fresh oysters and double dipped wings, recently opened its newest location in the Hampton Cove area, a suburb of Huntsville. This marks the 10th Jefferson's restaurant in Alabama, and the Hampton Cove location is ideally outfitted for family events and game days with 22 televisions, chilled pint glasses and a kids' menu. The new restaurant is at 326 Sutton Road SE, Owens Cross Roads.
Taziki's followed a similar playbook. The Hampton Cove site at 6407 Hwy 431, Suite D, is projected to open in mid-2025. The Hampton Cove site will include a charming patio designed for relaxed gatherings with friends and family.

Neither is a destination restaurant on its own. Together they are the reason a lot of residents stopped defaulting to a drive over the mountain for a casual meal out.
The Playground That Reshuffled Saturday
Cove Universal Playground opened in phases and finally wrapped in 2023. North Alabama's first universal playground will celebrate the conclusion of its final phase as the five-year $1 million project is now complete. The Cove Universal Playground, located at 429 Taylor Road in Owens Cross Roads, was established to create a fun and safe environment for children of the community to enjoy.
What makes it worth planning around is not the price tag. It is the design. Cove Universal Playground amenities: mostly covered playground equipment, zipline, swings, parent-child swings, toddler play area, older kids play area, tons of slides, ample climbing areas, picture communication boards, high back seesaws, high back merry-go-rounds, and more. The play area is entirely fenced in with double gates at the only entrance, so this is a playground for the runners! In addition, there's ample seating for the grownups and restrooms onsite as well as in the neighboring Mark Russell Recreation Center during open hours.
Double gates, covered equipment, restrooms next door, and a toddler zone that runs parallel to the older kids' side. If you have a two-year-old and a seven-year-old, this is the rare park where one adult can actually supervise both.
Another great feature is the toddler-specific playground right next to the big kid one. It is great for letting the littlest ones climb and explore this portion of Cove Universal Playground that is their size.
The 2026 Calendar Worth Marking
Three dates on the community calendar are worth adding to a phone right now.

The half marathon is the one most residents underestimate. The course will start on the Hays Nature Preserve Greenway and run to Old 431 turning left. Then continue past the ballfields running under Easter bypass through the tunnel. If you live along that stretch, expect road-adjacent activity from about 6 a.m. on race day. Please park at Hampton Cove Elementary/Middle School and walk over to starting area. That is also the closest bailout point if you plan to spectate for a mile and head home.
The Two Ends of Hays
Hays Nature Preserve does more work than most residents give it credit for. The adjacent 538-acre Hays Nature Preserve and the Big Cove Creek Greenway extend the community's natural footprint significantly, offering more than 10 miles of hiking, biking, and walking trails through protected woodland and creek corridor terrain. The southern end of the preserve is where the Flint River Greenway begins, and it is also the launch point most residents use for paddling. Huntsville's own tourism page lists Hampton Cove Kayak Adventures on the Flint as part of the community's outdoor mix, and the preserve is where that trip usually starts.
The northern half of the network runs somewhere different. The Flint River Greenway connects Hays with another greenway, Big Cove Creek, providing more than 10 miles of hiking and biking trails. Horses are even welcome for trail riding on the northern end. Very few subdivision-adjacent trail systems in North Alabama accommodate horses. If you have kids who ride, or you want to explain to visiting family why Hampton Cove feels different from a standard master-planned suburb, that detail does more work than a brochure.
The Golf You Can Actually Walk To
Golf earned Hampton Cove its first wave of attention in the 1990s and it still anchors the south side of the community. The 54-hole facility spans 630 acres and features three courses: The Highlands Course, a Scottish links-inspired layout with bent grass greens and rolling terrain; The River Course, the only RTJ layout in the world without a single bunker; and The Short Course, an 18-hole par-3 layout with water in play on 11 holes. A 35,000-square-foot clubhouse with a restaurant, pro shop, and bar serves all three courses.
Two details are worth pulling out for residents who do not play. First, the clubhouse restaurant is open to the public and works as an easy lunch stop when you have out-of-town guests who want a view. Second, the River Course sits on former floodplain and the trees are original. The black oak behind the 18th green is alleged to be the third oldest in the state at 250 years. That is a walk worth taking even if you never carry a club.
The Small Things That Change a Week
A few practical bits that only surface after a year of living here.
The Short Course is the right introduction for a kid learning to swing, because water carries on eleven holes make the round feel eventful without demanding a driver. The Big Cove Creek Greenway is heavily shaded, which matters in July. The trail is very wide and lots of room to get off in the grass if need be. Not a lot of benches to take a break and no restrooms until you get to Hays Preserve. That last point is worth planning around if you are running with young kids.
Community events also collect at Hampton House, which is the private amenity building most new residents miss for the first few months. Between the recreation center on Taylor Road, the Hampton House, and the golf clubhouse, Hampton Cove now has three separate gathering points within a five-minute drive of each other. That density is what changes a Saturday from a drive-out into a walk-out.
What This Adds Up To
The version of Hampton Cove that gets described in relocation guides tends to lead with the golf trail and the school zones. The version residents actually live in 2026 is shaped by the pavement between those anchors. Twenty miles of it, tying two new restaurants, a universal playground, a 538-acre preserve, and a March race start line into something you can traverse without a car.
If you want a house that sits somewhere useful on that network, the specific street matters more than the subdivision name. Lots close to the Big Cove Creek Greenway or the Little Cove Greenway spur behave differently on a Saturday morning than lots two turns removed. When my clients ask me to weigh two Hampton Cove listings, that is usually where the tiebreaker lives.
